Daniel Grimwood, (ref. 4) successivelyfather and son, thereafter appears as occupant and in 1801 the sonbought the freehold from Gerard Noel Noel, (ref. 5) who was thendisposing of much of his property hereabouts.Three or four years laterWilliam Malcolm took over as Grimwood's tenant, and Malcolm's Nurserycontinued here until 1837. (ref. 6) In 1824 Malcolm paid the seeminglyrather moderate sum of £300 for a 21-year lease, at £180per annum, ofthe well-established nursery on what was called a five-acre site. Thelessor was John Desse Grimwood, the younger Daniel's son, who,marrying a Chilean lady, had emigrated to South America. In 1848 John Inderwick, took a lease from representatives of J. D.Grimwood, who had died in 1843, Strangely, the lease was for only 21years It was about 1870 before preparations were made for the totalrecasting of the area as a street of houses and 1875 before it wasbegun. This comparative tardiness in conforming to the local norm ofbricks and mortar was doubtless due principally to the existence and,at the same time, the shortness of Inderwick's lease expiring atMichaelmas 1868. Behind this again lies the fact of J. D.Grimwood'semigration to raise a family in Chile. The freeholders were thusexpatriate and, it seems,Hispanicized, and on Grimwood's death atValparaiso in 1843 his Kensington property passed to his Chileansons-in-law in trust equally for his seven children. One ofthese,Juan, was of weak intellect, and this probably put some check onquick decisive handling of the site on normal lines. Juan wasrepresented by his brother Ramon, who seems to have come to London in1868-perhaps with a view to the falling-in of the lease-and to haveacted in some sense for his brothers and sisters. Importantdevelopments on each side of the property at Palace Gate and Prince ofWales Terrace must have made more intensive use of the site seemworthwhile but seven more years passed before this was achieved. In1870 the Grimwood children sought a sale or partition of theKensington estate, but it was not until summer 1873 that a sale wasordered in accordance with a provisional contract that had beenconcluded in March of that year. For some reason it was two years morebefore the sale was made, in compliance with another Order ofCourt,and the site passed, in August 1875, to the contractualpurchasers, who were responsible for the buildings that can be seentoday. ...The party conveying the property was not an immediaterepresentative of the Grimwood family but Neve Lewis Hart of Ealing asthe recipient of a deed of transfer from the Grimwoods in 1873 andseemingly also as representative of a solicitor and locally activeproperty speculator, T. H.Scarborough, who was probably a mortgageefrom the Grimwoods. -------Daniel was a nurseryman of some repute. It is reported that in1775 whilst travelling in East Anglia,he discovered a rose in thegarden of a bakery in Needham. (Needham,Norfolk or Needham Market,Sfk?) He propagated this rose and called it "White Provence or RoseUnique". It still exists today (see Notes on the Moss Rose byMajorC.C. Hurs t - www.rdrop.com/~paul/hurst02.html for full details; surname is given as Greenwood). Either he or Daniel jnr also propagated the Grimwood Royal GeorgePeach. This is featured on Port Meirion pottery (for a picture seehttp://www.reedcross.com/Portmeir.htm). Various London directories between 1779 - 1789 showGrimwood & Hudson,Corner Arlington St, Piccadilly.1790-1795 Grimwood, Hudson & Barrett,Corner Arlington St, Piccadilly. The London Metropolitan Archives and PRO at Kew havevarious documentsassociated with this partnership. He wrote his Will 4 Sept 1788 by which time Daniel jnr was his onlysurviving child. It is a very lengthy Will (10 large pages) but themain beneficiaries are:Daniel his son, and in the case of him dyingfirst, William Grimwood (son of my late brother William Grimwood)ofCapell Sfk and if he also dies before probate, JohnGrimwood (son ofmy late brother John) of Weeley, Ess Probate was granted 10 Aug 1796.

The Metropolitan Police was created 29 Sep 1829 and the BowStreetPatrol was slowly integrated into the Met. from thattime. However,ittook until 7 Dec 1837 for William to become a member ofthe Met. He wasposted as an Inspector to E division - HQ ,Bow Street! In a way he was demoted (Superintendent to Inspector) butin those daysestablishment wouldn't allow a Bow Street manto become whatwas then avery senior officer in the Met. Perhaps he'd hadenough and was happyto lead a less stressful life. If he was previously a lawyer he may have been in his late20s when hejoined the Bow St Patrol & therefore even olderwhen he joinedthe Met.At the moment I can't find any gratuity orpension for him . At presentno records survive on the BowStreet Patrolexcept for a few Bow Stofficers who came into the Met. in1829.
